One unit missing and anonym does not care

In this work, Chao examines the dominance of the objective spirit over the subjective spirit in Shenzhen, a metropolis in China known for its robust economic strength yet notable lack of attention to the individuality of its urban inhabitants. Here, individuals have been transformed into a unified and holistic entity—a body of great productivity, a body tamed. This state of tameness is not enforced through weapons, violence, or overt power; rather, it is meticulously designed, calculated, and subtly executed.

By employing a deadpan aesthetic in his portrayal of the city, Chao seeks to critically distance himself from the environment in which he resides, aiming to attain a comprehensive interpretation. The work integrates 3D-scanned models, manually constructed digital models, and authentic photographs—all depicting the same site and adhering to realism to a certain extent. Through the juxtaposition of fragmented and geometrically precise elements, he endeavors to express the tragic demise of anonymous individuality—a loss that provokes neither empathy nor interest from the authorities or the general populace themselves.

This piece invites viewers to reflect on the erosion of personal identity within the mechanized and homogenized urban landscape. It challenges the audience to consider the subtle mechanisms of control that shape societal behavior and to recognize the silent acquiescence to these forces. By highlighting the dissonance between individuality and the collective body, Chao underscores the profound impact of urbanization on the human spirit.
